Story Description
The Value of Helping is the eighth story in the New ValueTales series of illustrated books for children. This inspiring story tells the story of a young black slave named Harriet Tubman. As a young girl Harriet would question those older than her as to why she could not be free from slavery and live the life she wanted. She often talked of being free from slavery but the other slaves did not want to talk about freedom, for fear, they would be punished by their owners. Harriett would dream of freedom but since she had no one to talk to about her dreams, through her own best thoughts, shown through and imaginary character of a bright star named Twinkle she was able to keep her dream of freedom alive.
In an act of bravery one night she decided to escape to the North with two of her brothers. Her brothers became afraid and turned back, but with the help of Twinkle Harriet was able to reach the North and gain her freedom.
She then made her purpose in life to help other slaves in the South use the Underground Railroad to gain freedom for themselves.
