Story Description
The Value of Learning is the seventh story in the New ValueTales series of illustrated books for children. This enlightening tales tells the story of a young Polish girl named Marya. Her father is a scientist and from a young age Marya spends many hours with her father in the laboratory. Marya learned through her own best thoughts, shown through an imaginary character of a lively test tube named Fizz, that asking questions and reading are both excellent ways to learn.
She is a bright young girl who not only asks her father questions about his job as a scientist but she is an outstanding student. After a long financial struggle she is finally able to realize her dream of furthering her education at the Sorbonne in Paris, which at that time was one of the top colleges in Europe. Once in Paris she changes her name from Marya to Marie, which is the French form of Marya.
Marie lead a very full life which included marrying Pierre Curie, having children and using all she had learned from her father and her schooling to become a world renowned scientist. Children will be eager to return to the story over and over again, and parents, grandparents, teachers, and friends will find this story is a wonderful way to help children develop a strong sense of the value of learning.
