Story Description

The Value of Respect is the eleventh story in the New ValueTales series of illustrated books for children.  This tales tells the story of Abraham Lincoln.  Many people are familiar with his work during the Civil War, but this story begins early in Abe’s childhood and tells how he grew into the man that helped to end slavery.

Abe and his family did not have an easy life.  They were farmers in the wilderness of Kentucky, but the soil was no good and the Lincoln family was very poor.  Abe’s mother taught him that it did not matter how much money he had as long as he had respect for others he would be respected in return.  The Lincoln family had to make a difficult decision to leave Kentucky to move to a place where the soil would produce better crops for the family.

Abe felt very lonely having to leave his friends at school, but that is when he listened to his own best thoughts shown through a squirrel named Bushy.  The Lincoln family moved to Indiana where shortly after their arrival Mrs. Lincoln passed away.  This was a very difficult time for Abe, but he always remembered what his mother had taught him about respecting others.  Children will be eager to return to the story over and over again, and parents, grandparents, teachers, and friends will find this story is a wonderful way to help children develop a strong sense of the power respect can have in their lives and of those around them.
