Story Description

The Value of Understanding is the ninth story in the New ValueTales series of illustrated books for children. This enjoyable tale tells the story of Margaret Mead, a young girl who grew up with her parents and grandmother who were all college graduates at a time when not many women had the opportunity to attend college.

Margaret liked to ask her family questions about what they had studied and decided from a young age that she wanted to be a social scientist like her mother.  Though she could talk to her parents or grandmother about her thoughts, she wanted someone her own age to talk to.  Through an imaginary character named Per Sun, she could feel as though she had someone to talk to about her hope of going to college and becoming a social scientist herself so she could understand how people all over the world lived.

Margaret was able to attend college and not only become a social scientist, but she traveled across the world to live with other peoples.  Margaret believed that when we can understand how other peoples live we are better able to understand ourselves.  Through Margaret’s travels and books  she wrote about living among different cultures she was able to bring a rich understanding of other people to those living in America.  Children will be eager to return to the story over and over again, and parents, grandparents, teachers, and friends will find this story is a wonderful way to help children develop a strong sense of the power of understanding others in their lives.
